Activity 2: Create a transfer curve to control tonal response

Background

This feature allows users to manually create transfer curves by directly entering the values of Tint In and Tint Out in the Transfer Curves section of the Print Curves tab.

This is useful when transitioning from another workflow and want to use legacy curve adjustments in ColorFlow.

Tasks

Purpose

Create a CMYK transfer curve from a set of values.

Task 1: Create a Transfer Curve by Direct Input of Tint In and Tint Out 

1. In ColorFlow, click the Print Curves tab.
2. In the Transfer Curves section on the left panel, click the Add button.

3. In the Curve Name box at the top of the right panel, enter (where XX = your initials).XX CMYK transfer curve

4. Make sure the "Show at Prinergy" box is checked.
5. In the Device Conditions section, leave all settings with defaults.
6. In the Curve Channels section, in the Process Inks list, select Separate Channels for CMYK.

7. In the Curve Definition section, perform these actions:

   1. In the Channel Selector, select Cyan.

   2. From the curve origin list, select Tinted In/Out Points.
   3. Click on the Tint Set button.
   4. Click the Add button.
   5. Here is .10 25 50 75 90

   6. Enter the following values of Tint Out:

      10	8
      25	23
      50	47
      75	72
      90	87

   7. In the Channel Selector, select Magenta and enter the following Tint Out values:

      10	7
      25	22
      50	46
      75	71
      90	87

   8. In the channel selector, select Yellow and enter the following Tint Out values:

      10	7
      25	23
      50	47
      75	73
      90	88

   9. In the channel selector, select Black and enter the following Tint Out values:

      10	8
      25	23
      50	48
      75	72
      90	87

8. Click Apply.
   A CMYK print transfer curve is generated. It bears the name .XX CMYK transfer curve

Task 2: Produce a page using the print transfer curve in Prinergy

1. In Prinergy, create a new position and give it a name (where XX = your initials).XX Print Transfer
2. Refine Chart_TintRamp_CMYK.pdf with 1stRef-Normz.
3. Output the PDF file using Virtual Proof.LoosePage with the print transfer curve you just created:
   
   1. In your Virtual Proof.LoosePage Process template dialog box, from the Virtual Proof Output list.
   2. Leave ColorFlow Color Relationship Management unchecked.
   3. Expand the calibration and filtering panel.
   4. Select the ColorFlow Current Status radio button.
   5. Expand the print curve drop-down list and select XX curve CMYK transfer curve.
4. Open the page generated in VPS and measure the patch by 50% for each color.
   Confirm that the print transfer curve has been applied and that the patches at 50% measure CMYK 47 46 47 48. You can check for other patches to confirm their values.

Outcome

You have created a transfer curve to adjust the tonal output to match the target values of the data provided.
